Image Size Guide for Social Media 2026 – All Platforms

Every social media platform has its own recommended image dimensions. Using the wrong size leads to awkward cropping, blurry images, and a less professional look. This guide covers the most important image sizes for all major platforms in 2026 so you can resize your images correctly the first time.

Facebook

  • Profile Photo: 170 × 170 px (displays as a circle)
  • Cover Photo: 820 × 312 px (desktop), 640 × 360 px (mobile crop)
  • Feed Post (landscape): 1200 × 630 px
  • Feed Post (square): 1080 × 1080 px
  • Stories: 1080 × 1920 px (9:16 ratio)
  • Event Cover: 1200 × 628 px
  • Shared Link Thumbnail: 1200 × 630 px

Facebook compresses images heavily on upload, so start with a high-quality source file. JPEG at 85% quality or PNG for graphics with text will produce the best results after Facebook’s re-compression.

Instagram

  • Profile Photo: 320 × 320 px (displays as a circle)
  • Square Post: 1080 × 1080 px (1:1)
  • Portrait Post: 1080 × 1350 px (4:5) — takes up the most feed space
  • Landscape Post: 1080 × 566 px (1.91:1)
  • Stories / Reels: 1080 × 1920 px (9:16)
  • Carousel: same as posts, all slides should use the same aspect ratio

The 4:5 portrait ratio (1080 × 1350) is the most effective for engagement because it occupies the largest area in the feed. For product photos and portraits, this is the format to prioritize.

X (Twitter)

  • Profile Photo: 400 × 400 px (displays as a circle)
  • Header Image: 1500 × 500 px
  • In-Feed Image (single): 1200 × 675 px (16:9) or 1080 × 1080 px (1:1)
  • In-Feed Image (two images): 700 × 800 px each
  • Card Image: 800 × 418 px (1.91:1)

X displays images at a 16:9 aspect ratio in the timeline by default. Images that do not match this ratio get cropped automatically. For full control, resize to exactly 1200 × 675 before uploading.

LinkedIn

  • Profile Photo: 400 × 400 px
  • Background Image: 1584 × 396 px
  • Feed Post: 1200 × 627 px (landscape) or 1080 × 1080 px (square)
  • Company Logo: 300 × 300 px
  • Company Cover: 1128 × 191 px

LinkedIn favors clean, professional-looking images. Square and landscape formats both perform well for feed posts. Keep file sizes under 5 MB for reliable uploads.

YouTube

  • Channel Profile: 800 × 800 px
  • Channel Banner: 2560 × 1440 px (safe area: 1546 × 423 px center)
  • Video Thumbnail: 1280 × 720 px (16:9, minimum 640px wide)
  • Community Post: 1200 × 675 px

Thumbnails are arguably the most important image on YouTube. Use the full 1280 × 720 resolution with bold, readable text. Keep file size under 2 MB (JPEG format recommended).

TikTok

  • Profile Photo: 200 × 200 px (displays as a circle)
  • Video Cover / Thumbnail: 1080 × 1920 px (9:16)
  • Photo Post: 1080 × 1920 px (9:16)

TikTok is vertically oriented, so all content should be designed for the 9:16 aspect ratio. Images used as video covers should have key content centered, as TikTok may crop the edges slightly on different devices.

General Tips for All Platforms

  • Always start with the highest resolution source — scale down, never up
  • Use JPEG for photographs and PNG for graphics with text or logos
  • Compress before uploading to maintain control over quality instead of letting the platform’s aggressive re-compression degrade your image
  • Save platform-specific presets so you can batch process content for multiple channels

QuickImg lets you resize, crop, and compress images to any custom dimension for free. All processing runs in your browser, so your images stay private and there are no upload limits or watermarks.
