HEIC vs JPG: Understanding the Formats

HEIC / HEIF

Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. Uses advanced HEVC compression for roughly 50% smaller files than JPEG at equal quality. Limited support outside Apple devices.

JPEG / JPG

The universal photo format. Supported on every device, browser, and application. Lossy compression with adjustable quality. Best for sharing and uploading photos.

WebP

Google's modern format offering 25-35% smaller files than JPEG. Great browser support. Ideal for web use where smaller file size matters.

When to Convert HEIC Files

You should convert HEIC to JPG when sharing photos with Windows users, uploading to websites that don't accept HEIC, attaching images to emails for maximum compatibility, or printing photos through online services. Most social media platforms accept HEIC, but JPG remains the safest choice for universal compatibility.

iPhone Camera Settings

Your iPhone saves photos in HEIC by default to save storage space. To change this, go to Settings > Camera > Formats and select Most Compatible to shoot in JPEG instead. Note that HEIC files are roughly half the size of equivalent JPEGs, so switching will use more storage on your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is HEIC format?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads running iOS 11 or later. It uses the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) standard and provides better compression than JPEG while maintaining higher image quality, resulting in photos that take up roughly half the storage space.
Why can't I open HEIC files on Windows?
Windows does not natively support HEIC files without installing the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. Many older applications and websites also lack HEIC support. Converting to JPG ensures your photos can be opened on any device or platform without additional software.
Is this conversion done on your server?
No. All conversion happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your HEIC files are never uploaded to any server. This means your photos remain completely private and the tool works even without an internet connection after the page loads.
Will I lose image quality when converting?
There is minimal quality loss when converting at high quality settings (90%+). JPG is a lossy format, so some data is discarded, but at quality 92 (the default) the difference is virtually imperceptible. For lossless conversion, choose PNG as the output format.
Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?
Yes! This tool supports batch conversion. You can select or drag-and-drop multiple HEIC files and convert them all at once. After conversion, use the Download All button to get a ZIP file containing all converted images.
